We’re looking forward to our favorite online event of the year, once again proudly sponsoring Library Journal and School Library Journal’s LibraryCon Live! on Thursday, November 9, 2023. The free virtual event celebrates its ninth year with a full day of programming featuring comics and graphic novels, and is an excellent opportunity to catch up on readers’ advisory recommendations and professional development.
It’s a point of personal pride to watch the Comics Plus catalog grow deeper and stronger with each passing month, particularly using our Age-Appropriate Guidelines to ensure we’re fulfilling our promise to all librarians to offer age-appropriate selections for every reader. During the age review process I’m always finding a handful of new titles for readers of different ages and interests for our curated Recent Additions list, and what follows are my picks from some of the best titles added to Comics Plus in the past month or so. This month’s selections happened to have lots of titles featuring interesting female and/or LGBTQ characters, as well as plenty of high-concept storylines sure to have you nodding your head approvingly as they take shape in your mind. See if you can spot the themes as we explore a bit…
LibraryPass is excited to be exhibiting at AASL 2023 (Tampa Bay, FL) for the first time! In addition to demos of Comics Plus and hosting a session on dealing with book challenges, we’re also bringing along a small library featuring some of our favorite publishers’ comics and manga that we’ll be giving away to one lucky school librarian at the end of the show!
Over the all-too-short summer you likely had any number of distractions to lure you away from your Comics Plus shelf, but we were as busy as ever adding a whole bunch of new comics and manga to our platform every week. While I can’t speak to everyone’s tastes, I literally look at every comic we add to our ever-growing collection, and every week I pick the featured titles that appear in our curated Recent Additions list. I’m always finding a handful of new titles for readers of different ages and interests that stand out for one reason or another, and starting with this inaugural Summer recap, I’ll be spotlighting a handful of them every month.
Comics are hot, especially manga, but comics content challenges are also on the rise, while access and affordability issues persist. Digital access to comics and manga is a viable option, but only when publishers and creators believe in the full value of the library market and make their titles available in multiple formats, at affordable prices. There is a lot of work to be done, but no librarian is alone in their efforts, and the monetary payoff is worth it for vendors and publishers if they remain focused on reaching and engaging new readers at every possible opportunity.
