Almost everyone has a personal story about the library. It’s been a third place for many over the years, not only offering access to a wealth of knowledge, exploration, and imagination, but also playing an important role in forming core memories. We asked folks across our teams at LibraryPass to share their fond memories.
Vickie Blankenship is a Customer Engagement Specialist for LibraryPass and former school librarian. Her fond memory of the library involved a beloved story that has stood the test of time across generations: Charlotte’s Web.
“My first encounter with the book Charlotte’s Web occurred in my school library, under the watchful eye of my school librarian, Mary Lee Barron. Though my childhood home cherished reading, our personal library was modest,” Vickie shares.
Thus, she found herself falling in love with books at her school library during the school year, and each summer would transition to reading at the public library. “It was within the school library that Charlotte’s Web, with its captivating cover featuring a red-haired girl who looked like me, caught my attention,” Vickie recalls.
“Mary Lee Barron assured me I would enjoy this heartwarming tale of friendship between a pig and spider. Intrigued, I borrowed the book, and her promise proved true. I was so captivated that I persuaded my parents to gift me a paperback copy, a cherished book that still holds a place of honor in my office today.”

“With the right words, you can change the world.”
The classic story of a pig and a spider resonated so much with Vickie that she was influenced to do something that will live on forever in her family. As the story goes, Fern, the main character in Charlotte’s Web, has a brother named Avery. In a beautiful nod to her beloved book, Vickie named her own son Avery.
So you see, a core fond memory of the library not only lives on in its original experience, but also in the family lineage she has through her son, Avery. There are many ways that experiences at the library, or with a helpful librarian, can positively influence a reader’s life, and perhaps even influence the trajectory of their personal journey, too.
