LibraryPass has announced a distribution agreement with Astra Publishing House to make TOON Books’ full digital catalog available to libraries and schools through Comics Plus. With Comics Plus, readers can access thousands of digital comics, graphic novels, and manga through their school or library—with unlimited simultaneous access for online and offline reading.
Launched in 2008 by Françoise Mouly, and acquired by Astra in 2022, TOON Books revolutionized the field by producing a series of award-winning comics designed specifically for readers grades K–3. Together with TOON Graphics, for visual readers in grades 3–6, TOON books are all about using kids’ natural affinity for the symbolic language of comics, to get everyone, even the most reluctant readers, to develop a passion for reading.
“Since its inception, TOON recognized the absolute vitality of schools and libraries for reaching young readers,” said Ben Schrank, COO of Astra Publishing House. “Françoise Mouly’s brilliant vision was to combine a leveled readers program with stories from the world’s best authors and illustrators to create books that entertain everyone who reads them, and we are here to support that vision in every way we can.”
Featuring notable creators like Ivan Brunetti, Eleanor Davis, Neil Gaiman, Jaime Hernandez, Jeff Smith, and Art Spiegelman, TOON’s titles have won the Theodor Seuss Geisel, Eisner, and BolognaRagazzi awards, and been included on a wide range annual Best Books lists. Each book is just right for reading to the youngest child, but this is also the first and only collection ever designed to offer early and reluctant readers comics they can read themselves.
“We’re honored to have TOON Books’ full collection available on Comics Plus, expanding our collection of age-appropriate titles for our youngest readers,” said Guy LeCharles Gonzalez, LibraryPass’ Chief Content Officer. “We wholeheartedly believe comics are a perfect gateway for emerging readers, and TOON has published some of the best work in the category.”
